ENG1 Medical Near Me: Approved UK Doctors by City (2026)
ENG1 medical near me: how to find an approved UK doctor
To get an ENG1 medical near you, choose a doctor from the MCA's list of approved doctors in the UK and book with them directly by phone, email or online. Only a doctor named on that list can issue an ENG1 (sometimes written ENG 1). An ordinary GP or clinic that isn't on the list can't. In the UK the fee is fixed at £115.
The Maritime and Coastguard Agency splits the list into England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Crown Dependencies. All five pages were last updated on 12 October 2026. The tables below cover the approved doctors in the UK's main maritime and yachting hubs, with details exactly as the MCA list shows them. If you're new to all this, our ENG1 medical certificate guide explains what the certificate is and how long it lasts. This post is just about finding a doctor and getting booked.
Check the live list before you book. Doctors get added, removed and marked "temporarily unavailable". An ENG1 from a doctor who isn't approved is worthless. Coming up first on Google for "ENG1 near me" doesn't mean a clinic is approved. It takes thirty seconds to find the doctor's name on the gov.uk page.

Belfast and Northern Ireland

Everywhere else
The list also covers Bristol, Cumbria, Dorset (Poole and Portland), Essex, Kent, Lancashire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Greater Manchester, Norfolk, Nottinghamshire, Suffolk, Sussex, the West Midlands and Yorkshire. Wales is on it too (Cardiff, Newport, Neath, Holyhead, Anglesey and Pembrokeshire), along with Dundee, Inverness, Fort William, Connel (near Oban) and the Scottish islands, plus one doctor each in Jersey and the Isle of Man. A couple of entries elsewhere are marked "temporarily unavailable", which is one more reason to check the live list.
What an ENG1 costs in the UK
The MCA's seafarers medical certification guidance is clear: the current fee for an ENG1 is £115 (very roughly €130, depending on the exchange rate). The limit is set in UK regulations, so a UK approved doctor can't charge you more for the standard medical.
The exception is extra tests. If you need something like a step test, the doctor can charge more, but this has to be agreed with whoever is paying before the test is done.
If you're employed in the UK, your employer pays. Most green crew aren't employed by anyone yet, so plan to pay the £115 yourself and count it as part of your startup costs, along with your STCW.
Book early, before the spring crew-up
Many Med boats crew up in spring, and a lot of new crew try to get their ENG1 and STCW done in the same few weeks before flying to Antibes or Palma. Don't leave yours until then.
- Book as soon as you've decided to go. Most doctors on the list take bookings by phone or email. Some have an online diary.
- Try a few doctors. If your nearest is full, the next town over may have a slot this week.
- Renewing? Don't leave it to the last week. An ENG1 that expires before your start date is an easy reason for a captain to move on to the next CV.
Heading abroad before you've sorted it? We cover the approved doctors on the Riviera in ENG1 doctors in Antibes and the three in the US in ENG1 in Fort Lauderdale. The Riviera doctors who publish a fee charge €170, so if you're in the UK, book here.
What to bring to your ENG1 medical
The clinic will tell you what to bring when you book. The MCA guidance asks for:
- Your current ENG1 or equivalent, if you have one
- Any medication you're taking
- Glasses or contact lenses, plus spares
- Your GP's name and phone number
- Any reports or letters from your GP, if you've recently been to hospital or under a consultant
- Valid photo ID: passport, driving licence, national ID or citizen's card, or discharge book/seaman's card
Be straight with the doctor. You must tell them if you've failed an ENG1, been given restrictions, or didn't finish an ENG1 exam with another approved doctor. If you don't, the MCA can treat it as "doctor shopping", and that could invalidate your ENG1.
For what happens in the exam itself, and what an ENG3 means if you're found unfit, read what to expect at your ENG1 medical.
When do you get your ENG1 certificate?
If you pass, you'll usually get your certificate on the day of the examination. It won't be same-day if the doctor has concerns about your fitness and needs more medical information or advice from the MCA's chief medical adviser. If the decision is likely to take a while, you'll be given a temporarily unfit certificate in the meantime.
Quick answers
How much is an ENG1 in the UK? £115. That's the fee set in UK regulations, and extra tests can cost more if they're agreed in advance.
Can my GP do an ENG1? Only if your GP is named on the MCA's approved list. Plenty of approved doctors work out of ordinary surgeries, but a GP who isn't on the list can't issue an ENG1.
How long does an ENG1 take? It's a single appointment, and if you pass you usually walk out with the certificate the same day.
How do I find an ENG1 approved doctor near me? Search the MCA's UK approved doctors list, which is sorted by nation and then by county or city, and contact the doctor directly. The tables above cover the main hubs.
Will an ML5 do instead? No. The ML5 is a lower-level medical and won't get you a yacht job. See ENG1 equivalent medical certificates for what is accepted.
Once you've got your ENG1
With your ENG1 medical done and STCW Basic Training behind you, you have the minimum a captain needs to see. Next comes getting in front of boats. Our yacht jobs guide covers where jobs are posted and the steps to your first one. The dockwalking guide and how to build a yacht CV cover the legwork.
You can also let captains come to you. Radius checks your ENG1 (or an accepted equivalent) when you add it to your profile. Crew with a valid ENG1, STCW, a CV and a recent check-in show up on the map for captains looking for crew nearby. It's free for crew: create your profile.
