Yacht Chief Stew Salary 2026: $4,500–$11,200 + Duties
How much does a chief stew make on a yacht?
A yacht chief stew earns about $4,500–$11,200 a month (€4,000–€10,000) in base salary in 2026. Yacht size makes the biggest difference: on a 30–40m yacht you're at the bottom of that range, and on 80m+ you're at the top, usually with equal rotation (YPI Crew, 2026). Charter tips come on top.
Updated November 2026. Figures are gross monthly base pay before tips. Agency guides publish in euros, so I've converted at the ECB reference rate of about $1.12 per euro (2 November 2026), rounded to the nearest $100. The dollar figures move with the exchange rate.
Two placement figures back that up. Lighthouse Careers reports a median of €7,050 (about $7,900) across 22 chief stew placements (Lighthouse Careers, 2026). Quay Crew surveyed more than 100 chief stews on 40m to 100m+ yachts and found an average of €7,237 (about $8,100) (Quay Crew, October 2023).

Not every guide is that generous. The UKSA salary guide (January 2025) puts chief stew/purser at €2,800–€4,000 on 45–55m and €3,000+ above that, so treat it as a floor. The most recent dollar figure I could find from a US source is Dockwalk's 2021 range of $6,500–$10,000 for chief stews on yachts over 70m (Dockwalk, 2021). It's five years old, so take it as a floor too.
Rotation vs permanent
On most boats under 60m the job is permanent, with 60–90 days' leave a year. Rotation means a set block on, then the same block off. It starts to appear at 60–80m and is standard for chief stews on 80m+. Quay Crew found more than two-fifths of chief stews on time-for-time rotation, and a further 13% on some other rotation. It also notes that time-for-time rotation often comes with a salary sacrifice.
Tips
On a charter yacht, tips can be a big part of what you take home. The MYBA guideline is 5–15% of the gross charter fee (not the APA), and tipping is optional. On most boats the captain splits the tip equally, so the chief stew gets the same share as the junior. Dockwalk's worked example: a $300,000-a-week charter with 15 crew, tipped at 10%, pays $2,000 each for that week (Dockwalk, 2021). According to YachtCharterFleet (2023), Med tips tend to sit at the low end of that range, while US and Caribbean tips are "often calculated at the upper end of the scale".
Bonuses and benefits
Quay Crew found that a third of chief stews get a 13th-month bonus and one in five get no bonus at all. Food and a cabin are covered while you're aboard. Flights home and medical insurance vary by boat, so get both in writing before you sign.
What does a chief stew do on a yacht? (Chief stew job description)
The chief stew, or chief stewardess, is the head of the interior department. You answer to the captain, and you're responsible for everything guests see, touch and eat off inside the boat. The day-to-day job description:
- Running the interior team: hiring, training and managing the 2nd and junior stews. On bigger yachts that includes the heads of service, housekeeping and laundry.
- Rotas: writing the work schedule so service, cabins and laundry are covered and the team actually gets its rest hours.
- Guest service: planning and leading meal service, setting the table standard, and being the guests' main point of contact inside.
- Charter preference sheets: turning each guest's preferences (food, drinks, allergies, pillows, schedules) into a plan for the team and the chef.
- Liaising with the captain and chef: daily briefings on guest plans, menus, timings and any problems.
- Inventory and budgets: ordering and tracking linens, amenities, cleaning stock, flowers and wine, and keeping interior spending within budget.
- Housekeeping and laundry standards: cabin checklists, care of delicate fabrics, and inspecting the work before a guest sees it.
A formal place setting: water glass, red and white wine glasses, and cutlery laid from the outside in, one set per course. On a yacht the chief stew sets this standard and trains the team to hit it every night. Photo: Traumrune, CC BY-SA 3.0.
The honest part: on charter you're the first up and the last to bed, and you're managing the guests' mood and your team's at the same time. On a smaller yacht you'll still be doing turndowns and laundry yourself. The pay jump from 2nd stew is for the responsibility, not for shorter hours.
What qualifications do you need to become a yacht chief stew?
- STCW Basic Safety Training and an ENG1 medical. Every crew member needs both. See our guides to STCW basic safety training and the ENG1 medical.
- Food hygiene. Level 2 Food Safety is the baseline for interior crew. The GUEST chief stew level also lists the Level 3 Award in Supervising Food Safety (or equivalent).
- GUEST interior courses. The industry's interior training scheme runs from junior, to senior, to head of department (chief stew) level. Our guide to PYA GUEST courses covers each level and what it costs.
- Wine knowledge. A WSET Level 1 or 2 award gives you a grounding in the wine service a chief stew is expected to lead.
- Experience. Most chief stew jobs ask for 3–5 years in the interior department and experience managing 2–6 interior crew (Lighthouse Careers, 2026).
Only STCW and ENG1 are legal requirements. Captains hire chief stews on their references and their record over past guest seasons.
Can you become a chief stew with no experience?
No. Almost nobody walks onto a yacht as chief stew. You start as a junior stew and work up:
| Rank | What you do | Monthly base 2026 | Time before the next step |
|---|---|---|---|
| Junior / 3rd stew | Housekeeping, laundry, supporting service | $3,400–$3,900 (€3,000–€3,500) | GUEST senior level needs 12 months' yacht service + 60 guest days |
| 2nd / senior stew | Runs service or housekeeping, trains juniors | $3,900–$6,700+ (€3,500–€6,000+) | GUEST chief stew level needs roughly another 12 months + 60 guest days as a senior stew |
| Chief stew | Runs the whole interior | $4,500–$11,200 (€4,000–€10,000) | Most adverts ask for 3–5 years' interior experience in total |
| Purser (60m+) | Accounts, admin and provisioning | $7,800–$11,200 (€7,000–€10,000) | Usually a step on from chief stew |
Pay: YPI Crew, 2026.
The GUEST minimums are the fastest possible route. In practice, most chief stews have 3–5 years behind them by the time they get the job (Lighthouse Careers, 2026).
What actually gets you promoted:
- Stay put. Two full seasons on one boat reads better than five boats in two years, and it gives you a captain who'll vouch for you.
- Ask to run things. Volunteer to write the rota, do the inventory, or run a service while the chief stew is off. That's the experience captains are hiring for.

Chief stew vs purser vs interior manager
- Chief stew: head of the interior on most yachts. Runs the team, the service and the interior budget.
- Purser: mostly on 60m+ yachts. Handles accounts, admin and provisioning, usually on equal rotation.
- Interior manager: a title some large yachts use for the head of an interior split into service, housekeeping and laundry departments. It overlaps heavily with chief stew and purser, and how the roles divide varies by boat.
Chief stew FAQ
Does a chief stew get tips?
Yes, on charter yachts. On most boats tips are split equally across the crew, so the chief stew gets the same share as everyone else.
Do chief stews work rotation?
On 80m+ yachts, usually yes: YPI lists equal rotation as standard there. Under 60m, expect a permanent job with 60–90 days' leave.
How many crew does a chief stew manage?
Lighthouse Careers says chief stew jobs typically involve managing 2–6 interior crew. On the largest yachts the team is bigger and split under heads of service, housekeeping and laundry.
How much more does a chief stew make than a 2nd stew?
In Lighthouse Careers' placements, the median is €4,600 (about $5,200) for a 2nd stew and €7,050 (about $7,900) for a chief stew.
Is Below Deck what the job is really like?
The hours and the guest pressure are real. The drama is edited for TV.
